Key Takeaways

Think global with ESG

  • Many actors are involved in the global risks we face.
  • The capital model we have chosen is unsustainable and we need to look at alternative ways to succeed.
  • Historically, a key driver for organisations to govern their behaviour has been legislation or governance.
  • Today, there’s an additional driver on organisations – social awareness. It’s the reason why the public has more agency to hold organisations to account.
  • The public is now well aware of environmental issues and social injustices.
  • These drivers make it imperative that organisations put social issues on par with environmental issues.
  • In an organisation, supplier management, use of migrant workers, wages, welfare, training, etc. should be reviewed regularly.
  • It takes a united effort to address these many issues, no one organisation can act on their own.
  • UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a united call to act against a number of social issues.
  • We are leaving more than half of the world’s population behind.
  • Progress on 50% of the UN SDGs is weak.
  • The environmental resources that sustain life are at risk.
  • We are faced with a perma crisis across the globe on environmental issues.

How do these global issues relate to ESG in any organisation:

  • Europe’s tech sector: data centres need to move towards sustainability.
  • The sector is now being held to account for its climate credentials.
  • The climate-neutral data centre pact: has created a credible and accountable way to create clean and circular energy.
  • AtlasEdge is an example of an organisation that is serious about contributing to global targets.

Think global & local:

  • At a global level, the focus is on protocols. At a local level, change happens within communities.
  • The Montreal Protocol: Successful environmental governance of ozone-depleting substances.
  • Simple things organisations can do to move ESG onward is to look at their values. It’s about listening to your employees, suppliers and stakeholders.
  • To succeed with ESG include ethical and sustainable practices in your purpose-driven organisation.
  • Align your organisation’s purpose with the 17 UN SDGs. You’ll then feel like you’re part of a global effort to combat the issues we all face.
