From AI panic to AI governance
AI continues to dominate the media, mostly because of the stark warnings from industry insiders that innovation is moving too fast to ensure proper control, and that some AI models could cause serious risks, even to humanity itself.
It’s a unique challenge for boards and executives in the middle of all this noise: the warnings are frightening, but business must go on, and these leaders are under serious pressure to govern AI in a way that makes sense and keeps stakeholders on side.
It’s a mammoth task, but one very familiar to our guest for this episode, Stavros Gadinis, George R. Johnson Professor of Law at UC Berkeley in the United States, where he also serves as Faculty Director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Business.
Stavros’ new book: Corporate Ordering: How Corporations Navigate Social Conflict, is available online from early October, it zeroes in on the crucial responsibility of corporate leaders to write their own rules in key areas instead of waiting for regulators to catch up.

Savros Gadinis’ research examines corporate governance, corporate law, and financial regulation, with attention to the institutional framework through which rules are made, enforced, and integrated into corporate practice.
In addition to his work around AI, he has extensive history writing about environmental and social issues, matching internal governance with external standards, legal issues, the “Brussels Effect” and social risk.
Other focus areas concern the internal compliance and reporting systems that mediate between corporate decision-making and external accountability, as well as the institutional architecture of standard-setting and regulatory oversight.
Stavros serves as Faculty Director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Business, where he runs the Fall Corporate Governance Forum, the Spring M&A Forum, and the Berkeley Corporate and Climate Summit. He teaches Business Associations and advanced corporate law courses, and supervises the Berkeley Business Law Journal. Before entering academia, he practiced corporate law in Europe for four years. He holds an S.J.D. from Harvard, an LL.M. from the University of Cambridge, and a law degree from Aristotle University in Greece.
