The guide to building your boardroom career

The latest episode of the Corporate Governance Podcast is a deep dive into the essentials of building out your boardroom career.

It’s a daunting task; many beginners might not know where to start or think that the prospect is too overwhelming. Guest Mcklein Javeri – a strategy leader turned multi-board director – gives some crucial practical advice around highlighting your strongest qualities and securing roles that boost your credentials.

Mcklein and Dan will also get to the bottom of some common misconceptions in boardroom recruitment. Does a board member need to be a certain age? Is networking, the way most people describe it, really that valuable? Are you presenting your boardroom CV in the right way?

About our guest

A strategy leader turned multi-board director, Mcklein Javeri is a clear example of a different path. He built his early career at Virgin, easyJet and Monitor Deloitte before pivoting into board work. He’s held 7+ Non-Executive Director (NED) and board advisory roles across various industries — all before turning 35.

Mcklein is passionate about dispelling the older notion that board roles are just something to pursue much later in a career, once you’ve reached the C-suite and are starting to step back from full-time roles. In his view, that model is increasingly outdated.

Mcklein is now dedicated to reaching out to the far more vast pool of potential candidates who think that a board role could be for them. His insights cover myths, tactics, and how to build a portfolio that boosts income, expands your network, and enhances your career beyond the day job.

Today, he continues to combine both, treating board work as a deliberate and compounding part of his career.
