Tell us about your professional experience before discovering The Corporate Governance Institute.

I own and manage SCE Management and Consultancy Ltd; a Procurement Consultancy company. I have 30 years Procurement and Supply chain experience, during this time have worked with businesses and organisations such as the BBC, UK Gov, Nissan and Network Rail to name a few. Prior to running my own consultancy, I was Director of Indirect EMEA for a large packaging company, Coveris. The one common theme from the boards and senior leadership teams that I’ve worked with, has been the need to drive and manage efficiencies. My many years of experience has helped narrate and influence change within the business.

What challenges or opportunities were you facing in your career or on your board before taking our course?

One of the main challenges for leadership teams and boards has been keeping abreast of the requirements of good ESG practices. This and the rapid adoption of AI, both within the workplace and externally through the supply chain. Another factor has been a lack of structure within some boards.

Why did you choose to study for the Diploma in Corporate Governance with us to help with these challenges/opportunities?

The principal reason for choosing the Diploma was to both bring myself up to speed and stay ahead of the requirements and changes impacting business in the UK and EU. The Diploma in Corporate Governance, as well as the AI and ESG qualifications from TCGI allow me to fulfil both of these needs. This gave me access to the regulations required and gave me the language to communicate with and influence boards and senior teams.

Can you describe any particular elements of the course that stood out to you or made a significant impact?

One thing that I was not expecting, but enjoyed and found impactful, was the interaction with fellow students in the forums as part of the courses. It was good to get an insight into the success or shortcomings of other businesses and the experience of those people working within them.

How has completing this course influenced your career, leadership approach, governance or ESG skills?

Having an in-depth knowledge of subject matters such as general governance, AI and ESG has allowed me to add greatly and confidently to the conversation. In most cases I am now the one leading these conversations and guiding business and senior teams.

What did you find most beneficial about studying with The Corporate Governance Institute?

I set myself a bit of a challenge completing the Diploma and two other qualifications in only 6 months. The fact that I could manage this was enabled by the flexible and modular nature of TCGI’s courses as well as the support and advice from The Corporate Governance Institute. My aim was not to simply pass but to get as much value from the course as possible. The engaging material and relevant case studies helped me develop a deep understanding and context of the course material.

What advice would you give future learners wishing to pursue the Diploma?

Think about what it is you want to take away from your time studying. It is not just a case of passing, aside from gaining the qualification, there is little benefit unless you have understood the course at a deep level. Take time to really think about how what you are learning and experiencing would add value to your organisation and career. Lastly, I would say enjoy the experience and probably not take three at once.

How likely are you to recommend our certifications to a colleague?
