Tell us about your professional experience before discovering the Corporate Governance Institute

I am the Company Secretary and General Counsel for a publicly traded company. My legal practice began in a law firm and I later transitioned into corporate practice. For my new role, I did a lot of research on corporate governance, relying a lot on the local and UK Corporate Governance Codes to inform my drafts of the corporate governance plan for the company.

What challenges or opportunities were you facing in your career or on your board before taking our course?

The Company transitioned from private to publicly trading, so there was a need to elevate the governance standards. The board doubled in size to introduce more independent directors and as the Secretary I wanted formal training in corporate governance to support the company as it matures and expands.

Why did you choose to study for the Diploma in Corporate Governance with us to help with these challenges/opportunities?

The program appeared well rated and the brochure highlighted key modules that I thought were practical and relevant.

Can you describe any particular elements of the course that stood out to you or made a significant impact?

Elements on the governance framework, strategy and culture met or surpassed my expectations. However, the emphasis on board evaluations really opened my eyes and made me reflect on how to improve my board’s annual evaluation exercise. The elements on ESG showed me just how many opportunities we’re missing to emphasize the company’s efforts.

How has completing this course influenced your career, leadership approach, or governance or ESG skills?

I have become more confident because of the Diploma. I now have a greater understanding to be more discerning of good governance practices.
