Tell us about your professional experience before discovering the Corporate Governance Institute

My professional journey was firmly rooted in Engineering, Maintenance and Physical Asset Management across Mining and Processing Operations. Over the years, I progressed from trainee roles into leadership positions, gaining deep technical knowledge and hands-on experience in keeping operations safe, reliable and efficient.

As I advanced, I served as a Project manager, Section Engineer, Senior Engineer Reliability, Production Engineer and recently Maintenance and Reliability Superintendent. In these positions I led multidisciplinary teams, managed shutdowns, oversaw major maintenance budgets, implemented engineering standards and drove asset performance improvements through reliability engineering practices such as defect elimination, condition monitoring, total fluid management, rotables management and maintenance optimisation.

Across these responsibilities, I became increasingly involved in strategic decision-making, risk management, stakeholder engagement and compliance. My work demanded accountability, transparency, ethical leadership and long-term thinking, qualities that closely align with corporate governance principles.

This year, I felt a strong need to challenge myself beyond the technical space and deepen my understanding of the strategic side of organisational leadership. I.e. governance frameworks, boardroom dynamics, ESG responsibilities and the strategic decisions that shape operational performance. This motivated me to pursue the Diploma in Corporate Governance at TCGI to develop myself into a strategic, governance-minded leader.

What challenges or opportunities were you facing in your career or on your board before taking our course?

I was at a point in my career where I was seriously reflecting on my future goals and the kind of leader I want to become in the next few years. While I have built strong experience in the technical and operational space, I recognised a clear gap between where I am now and where I aspire to be. Although I do not yet have a board opportunity, I knew that developing governance capability early was essential to position myself for those roles when they do arise.

Why did you choose to study for the Diploma in Corporate Governance with us to help with these challenges/opportunities?

I was looking for a programme that was practical, real-world focused, and recognised globally. Coming from a technical and operational background and aiming to move into strategic leadership, I needed a course that would not only teach governance principles but also demonstrate how they are applied in real organisational and boardroom contexts. The flexibility of online learning allowed me to pursue this while continuing to work in a demanding environment.

Can you describe any particular elements of the course that stood out to you or made a significant impact?

The case studies were very practical and helped me see how governance works in real organisations. The modules on risk management, ethical leadership and accountability also helped me understand how good governance supports long-term success. These elements of the diploma changed my view of governance from just theoretical knowledge to practical skills that I can now use in my career.

How has completing this course influenced your career, leadership approach, or governance or ESG skills?

The diploma has strengthened my understanding of governance, risk management and ethical decision-making, preparing me to apply these principles effectively in my day-to-day work. It has also equipped me with the knowledge to identify potential risks, make ethical decisions and ensure processes align with organisational goals and compliance requirements.
