Tell us about your professional experience before discovering The Corporate Governance Institute.

Before discovering The Corporate Governance Institute, I had over a decade of NHS experience spanning multiple sectors, including transformation, operations and strategic change. I had held senior leadership positions and consulting roles within the wider NHS landscape. My range of work involved advising the executive team on service redesign, governance and organisational improvement, while managing large-scale transformation programmes and a large-scale operational portfolio. 

Alongside my public sector experiences, I developed a strong interest in healthcare policy, governance and board effectiveness. I also began researching and publishing evidence-informed articles on NHS reform, leadership, sustainability and health system transformation, translating operational experience into practical policy insights for senior healthcare leaders. This combination of delivery, strategic analysis and thought leadership reinforced my ambitions to deepen my expertise in corporate governance and board leadership, ultimately leading me to TCGI. 

What challenges or opportunities were you facing in your career or on your board before taking our course?

One of my challenges before taking on this course was ensuring that my extensive NHS operational and transformation experiences were matched by a formal understanding of corporate governance. I had worked closely with executive teams, produced governance reports, developed business cases and led large-scale transformation programmes, but I wanted to strengthen my ability in strategic governance discussions. 

My other challenge was bridging the gap between operational delivery and governance oversight. My experiences have given me insights into how organisations implement change, manage performance pressures and deliver improvement programmes, but I was seeking a deeper meaning and a framework for evaluating governance, risks, assurance and long-term sustainability. 

As my career moved towards advising senior stakeholders and contributing to healthcare policies and strategies, I wanted to build my governance expertise, which was needed to provide robust strategic advice and prepare for future Board and governance leadership opportunities.

Why did you choose to study for the Diploma in Corporate Governance with us to help with these challenges/opportunities?

I chose to pursue the Diploma in Corporate Governance through TCGI due to its reputation for blending academic rigor with practical skills. I was seeking learning that would build on my experience working with Boards and executive teams, while offering a structured understanding of governance, Board effectiveness, risk management, assurance and strategic oversight.

It provided an opportunity to enhance my ability to support Board decision-making, challenge effectively and contribute to organisational resilience and long-term strategy, as well as to reflect on my learning process.

Can you describe any particular elements of the course that stood out to you or made a significant impact?

Several aspects of the course stood out to me, especially its detailed yet focused coverage of Board effectiveness, governance frameworks and strategic decision-making. The modules on directors’ roles and responsibilities, governance structures, risk management and Board assurance were particularly valuable, as they offered a clear framework for understanding how effective governance enhances organisational performance and sustainability.

I also valued the combination of theory with real-world case studies and practical examples, along with encouragement for further research. This approach made it easier for me to connect the concepts to my experience working with Boards and executive teams, enabling a broader strategic reflection on governance. The course also boosted my confidence in assessing governance arrangements, contributing to Board discussions and applying governance principles to foster organisational improvement and sound decision-making.

How has completing this course influenced your career, leadership approach, governance or ESG skills?

Completing the Diploma in Corporate Governance has improved my ability to view leadership and organisational development through a governance perspective. My understanding of Board effectiveness, strategic oversight, risk management, assurance and ethical decision-making has deepened, enabling me to provide more balanced and evidence-based advice to senior leaders.

The course encouraged me to critically evaluate my leadership approach, emphasising the significance of good governance as the basis for sustainable organisational success. I now prioritise accountability, transparency, stakeholder engagement and long-term value when guiding transformation efforts and strategic decisions.

Professionally, this qualification has complemented my experience in public sector transformation, healthcare strategy and policy development. It has certainly boosted my confidence and credibility when engaging in governance discussions, preparing Board papers and advising executive teams. Additionally, it has enhanced my understanding of ESG principles and ways I could incorporate them into organisational strategy, risk management and sustainable healthcare delivery.

How has it improved decision-making or performance within your organisation?

The knowledge I learnt from the Diploma in Corporate Governance has enabled me to bring a stronger governance perspective to strategic decision-making and organisational improvement. Applying the knowledge I learnt from the course has strengthened my ability to incorporate governance perspectives into strategic decisions and organisational enhancements. Using governance principles, risk management and Board assurance frameworks, I am better prepared to craft comprehensive business cases, governance documents and recommendations that facilitate informed decisions by executives and the Board.

The course has improved my skills in constructive challenge, considering long-term impacts of strategic choices and aligning transformation initiatives with organisational goals, regulations and governance standards. This has led to more productive governance discussions, greater accountability and better oversight of complex projects. 

Overall, it has highlighted the significance of integrating governance, assurance and ongoing learning into organisational change, supporting sustainable improvements in performance, service quality and resilience.

Studying with The Corporate Governance Institute was highly valuable due to its practical approach to governance. The course extended beyond theoretical concepts, offering clear frameworks, real-life case studies and actionable tools that I could immediately implement with NHS Boards and executive teams. My advice is to approach the Diploma with an open mind and focus on how you can apply the learning in your own organisation – constantly think about your organisation!
