"Even before finishing the Diploma, I could already see myself applying the learnings to my day-to-day interactions in my organisation. It certainly has made me focus and prioritise governance not just at the board level but everywhere. I can already see that the Diploma in Corporate Governance is opening doors that I would not have had access to in the past."

Tell us about your professional experience before discovering The Corporate Governance Institute.

Before discovering The Corporate Governance Institute, I built a long career in technology, transformation and security leadership, including senior IT and cybersecurity roles such as Chief Information Security Officer and Chief Information Office. During my career I was involved in funding rounds leading to the sales of two companies. I was also a founder member and CEO at DNM for over 20 years.

What challenges or opportunities were you facing in your career or on your board before taking our course?

Before the course, I moved from a CEO role in Ireland to a senior leadership position at UKG, shifting from operational to strategic global responsibility. With board experience already, I sought to strengthen my corporate governance and ESG expertise, positioning myself for the next phase as a non-executive director.

Why did you choose to study for the Diploma in Corporate Governance with us to help with these challenges/opportunities?

I decided to enrol in the Diploma in Corporate Governance as I wanted to broaden my knowledge to cover a more global perspective and ensure I was up to date on the latest best practices for modern boards and organisations. The Diploma offered the perfect mixture of structured content, real world insights and extensive research opportunities that allowed me to work at my own pace while still interacting online with others.

Can you describe any particular elements of the course that stood out to you or made a significant impact?

What stood out for me in the Diploma was the great mixture of up to date content, case studies, video interviews and external research. I loved the interface and the easy way to follow the content, but also to stop and re-start as needed.

How has completing this course influenced your career, leadership approach, governance or ESG skills?

Even before finishing the Diploma, I could already see myself applying the learnings to my day-to-day interactions in my organisation. It certainly has made me focus and prioritise governance not just at the board level but everywhere. As I work on the next stage of my career, I can already see that the Diploma in Corporate Governance is opening doors that I would not have had access to in the past.

What did you find most beneficial about studying with The Corporate Governance Institute?

Unlike other governance courses that I researched, I believe that the structure of the material and the ability for anyone to work at their own pace is a major benefit of TCGI’s Diploma. Coupling this with the freshness of the material meant it was definitely a winner.

What advice would you give future learners wishing to pursue the Diploma?

My advice to future learners is to embrace the contact, but also to focus on the external links and additional resources as well. If you have ambitions to grow your board experience, it is critical to learn from the real world situations. There are great nuggets of information that will make you a better board participant.
